Basic Linux Shell Scripting for DevOps Engineers.

What is Shell ?

A shell is special user program which provide an interface to user to use operating system services. Shell accept human readable commands from user and convert them into something which kernel can understand. It is a command language interpreter that execute commands read from input devices such as keyboards or from files. The shell gets started when the user logs in or start the terminal.

What is a Shell Script?

A shell script is a series of commands written in a scripting language interpreted by the shell. It enables the automation of tasks that would normally be executed one after another in the terminal. For Linux systems, the Bash shell is commonly used for scripting.

Key Components:

  1. Shebang:

    • The first line of a script, starting with #!, specifies the path to the interpreter. For Bash, it's typically #!/bin/bash.
    #!/bin/bash
  1. Comments:

    • Use # to add comments for documentation and clarity.
    # This is a comment
  1. Variables:

    • Store values for reuse in your script.
    name="Harish"
    echo "Hello, $name!"
  1. Input:

    • Read user input using the read command.
    echo "What's your name?"
    read userName
    echo "Hello, $userName!"
  1. Conditionals (if statements):

    • Make decisions based on conditions.
    echo Enter the Number
    read num
    if [ $num -gt 10 ]; then
echo "Number is greater than 10."
    fi

Best Practices and Tips

  1. Shebang and Shell:

    • Always include the shebang line specifying the shell to use.
  2. Comments:

    • Add comments to explain complex sections or assumptions.
  3. Error Handling:

    • Implement error handling to handle unexpected situations gracefully.
  4. Modularization:

    • Divide your script into functions for better organization and reusability.
  5. Testing:

    • Test your script on a non-production environment before deploying.
  6. Logging:

    • Include logging mechanisms for better debugging.

Shell scripting is a powerful tool for DevOps professionals. It enables automation, simplifies tasks, and helps maintain consistency across various systems.
